Collectors of amber, antiques and small histories
Amber Rocket is a Tokyo gallery in the Kamata district devoted to natural amber jewellery, antique collecting and vintage decor, run by collectors who believe every object should come with its story intact.
A gallery born from a private collection
The gallery began as one collector’s cabinet of Baltic amber and pocket watches, shared with friends who kept asking where to find pieces of the same quality.
Today it occupies a narrow, light-filled shop in Kamata, Ota, a short train ride from the Jinbocho book and antique dealers where much of our early stock was found. We still buy the way a collector does: slowly, one piece at a time, and only when an object is genuine, interesting and in a condition we are proud to stand behind.
Amber, tested and explained
Amber is one of the most imitated materials in the world, so we test every amber item before it is offered and explain the results in plain language.
Our UV lamp, saltwater and hot-needle tests separate natural Baltic amber from pressed amber, copal and plastic. Each piece is labelled as natural, polished or heat-treated, and we are always happy to test amber products you already own, free of charge, as part of our commitment to an honest market.
Antiques with documented provenance
Behind every clock, compass and porcelain figure on our shelves is a file of research: maker marks, catalogue references and, where possible, the names of previous owners.
We work with auction houses, estate specialists and a network of more than forty dealers across Japan and Europe. When a piece arrives, we photograph it, research its origin and write a provenance card that travels with the object to its next owner, so its history is never lost again.
Conservation over restoration
Our approach to care is simple: preserve what is original, stabilise what is fragile, and never polish away the patina that makes an antique valuable.
Our in-house conservator handles cleaning, restringing and minor repairs, while clock movements, porcelain and textiles go to trusted specialists. Every intervention is recorded so future owners know exactly what was done, and why it was the least invasive option available.
Helping new collectors begin
Many of our clients arrive with a single inherited piece and leave with the beginnings of a collection and the knowledge to grow it well.
We run small in-gallery evenings on recognising natural amber, dating antique clocks and caring for vintage decor at home. There is no pressure to buy: we would rather you learn to spot a good piece anywhere than buy the wrong one from us.
An authenticity guarantee in writing
Every item we sell is covered by a thirty-day authenticity guarantee: if an independent expert disagrees with our description, we take the piece back and refund you in full.
We keep records of every sale, including test results and photographs, so that years later we can still answer questions about a piece or help with its resale. For us, a sale is the start of a relationship with a collector, not the end of a transaction.
